Brooklyn Man Charged in Katie Suarez’s Fatal Stabbing

Police sources said Sayed Mohassib, 27, faced a second-degree murder charge on November 7 in the fatal stabbing of Katie Suarez, 28, beside the Shore Parkway Greenway in Bath Beach, Brooklyn. Suarez was attacked on October 30 while jogging near the Belt Parkway.

Investigators used video showing Mohassib leaving the park around the time of the attack to track him to his New Jersey home, the sources said. They said he told police he could not remember the assault, but woke from a blackout covered in blood and holding the weapon. Investigators believe he discarded the knife, which was taken to a landfill.

Suarez’s father discovered her beside the trail when she did not join her parents after her run and stopped answering calls. She was taken to a hospital and later died from her injuries. Her phone, earbuds and jewelry were not taken, and police have described the attack as apparently random.

Mohassib worked as a teacher’s aide at a Bensonhurst school and had briefly served with the NYPD, the sources said. They said he was removed after being deemed psychologically unfit, and that the Marines had discharged him for apparent mental instability. Suarez’s family said she had no known enemies. Community members held vigils and called for greater safety measures along the waterfront path.
