Cowboys Blow Late Lead and Fall to Cardinals in Overtime
Dallas led 24-10 entering the fourth quarter but gave up three Arizona touchdowns as the Cardinals forced overtime. A missed extra point with six seconds left kept the game level at 30-30 and sent it to the extra period. After both teams punted, Arizona drove into range for a 42-yard field goal and a 33-30 win.
The Cardinals scored 21 points in the final 11 minutes of regulation and overtime. Tyler Allgeier ran for 202 yards for Arizona, averaging 13.4 yards per carry, while quarterback Gardner Minshew threw for 188 yards and three touchdowns after replacing Jacoby Brissett. The Cowboys had been 69-0 when leading by at least 14 points in the fourth quarter; the loss made that record 69-1.
Dallas also struggled to move the ball consistently. Dak Prescott finished with fewer than 200 passing yards, and Javonte Williams ran for 56 yards. The Cowboys allowed four sacks and surrendered the ball on downs after attempting to convert fourth-and-1 from their own 32-yard line in the first quarter.
Owner Jerry Jones was shown slamming his hands on a table and swearing in his suite after the loss. He said the defeat was a team failure and that he did not see a reason to dismiss coach Brian Schottenheimer midseason, recalling his earlier decision to fire Wade Phillips during the 2010 season.
The Cowboys, now 3-5, are scheduled to visit the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday. Tight end Jake Ferguson left with an ankle injury, and safety Caleb Downs exited with a concussion. Cornerback Joey Porter Jr. also dealt with an ankle issue during the game.
