Six Killed in Sunset Park House Fire

The fire began shortly before 1:40 a.m. at a two-story home on 58th Street. Flames and heavy smoke came from the windows as firefighters arrived and found both floors engulfed. More than 230 fire and emergency medical personnel responded, and the blaze spread to a neighboring building.

The fire collapsed the second floor and the staircase. Four people were found dead inside the home; two others were taken to a hospital in critical condition and later died.

Seven people were injured, including three firefighters. The injuries ranged from minor to serious, and residents’ injuries were characterized as not life-threatening. Fire crews remained at the scene after bringing the blaze under control, dousing hot spots and checking for flames concealed behind walls and siding.

The house sustained extensive damage, with much of its front exterior charred or destroyed. The fire displaced residents, and the American Red Cross is helping those left without homes find temporary housing.

Investigators have not determined what caused the fire. A rechargeable lithium-powered cell was discovered at the scene, prompting hazmat teams to respond. A fire marshal is examining whether it had any role in starting the blaze.
