Ronaldo Ends Portugal Career After 23 Years
Cristiano Ronaldo has ended his career with Portugal, saying he will no longer represent the national team. The 41-year-old made the announcement in a video message on November 5, bringing to a close a run that began in August 2003.
Ronaldo played in six World Cups and helped Portugal win a European Championship. He also holds the men’s record for international goals. In his farewell message, he said the national team’s No. 7 shirt was being passed on to the future and described representing Portugal as the greatest honor of his career.
His departure follows a disagreement with coach Jorge Jesus over his role during the previous international window. Ronaldo left the team camp, then returned to the setup after serving a suspension. He had previously said he hoped to help Portugal defend its UEFA Nations League title, but has now chosen to retire from international play.
Ronaldo said he leaves proud of his time with Portugal and grateful to supporters at home and abroad. He also said he would continue to cheer for the team. The No. 7 shirt will remain with Portugal, while Ronaldo said the pride of having worn it would stay with him.
