Jacobs Says Touchdown Celebration Referenced Gospel Song

Jacobs scored twice in Green Bay’s 27-19 win over Carolina at Lambeau Field on October 29. After his first touchdown, television cameras showed him with his hands behind his back, prompting viewers to interpret the gesture as a reference to his arrest in a domestic violence case.

After the game, Jacobs said the broadcast captured only part of the celebration. He said he and teammate Savion Williams had planned a sequence tied to “Break Every Chain,” a gospel song, and that the longer version showed Williams appearing to unlock chains before Jacobs broke free. Jacobs said the gesture had been misconstrued.

Jacobs pleaded no contest in September to a misdemeanor battery count and a charge of damaging property stemming from a May incident involving his then-girlfriend. He had missed six games while on the NFL commissioner’s exempt list before returning to play the previous week. The league’s investigation remains ongoing.

On the field, Jacobs had 39 rushing yards on 21 carries and added a touchdown reception. His rushing total was part of Green Bay’s 66 yards on 26 carries. The Packers converted all three of their red-zone opportunities, and quarterback Jordan Love praised Jacobs’ contributions in both the running and passing games.

Jacobs said the team still had work to do, including improving its run game. He also expressed regret before his return for bringing a distraction to the team, while his attorneys said he accepted responsibility and would not comment further because of ongoing legal matters.
