NFL Fines Darnell Washington for Touchdown Celebration
Washington caught a four-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers in the second quarter, giving Pittsburgh a 10-3 lead. The Steelers went on to beat New Orleans 16-10 in the NFL’s first regular-season game in France, improving their record to 5-2 and extending their winning streak to three games. Washington’s score was the team’s only touchdown in the game.
The NFL categorized the celebration as unsportsmanlike conduct, citing an illegal or vulgar act. Washington was not penalized during the game, but the league later issued the fine. The league and the NFL Players Association have reminded players that celebrations involving sexual gestures are prohibited and may draw a 15-yard penalty, a fine or both.
Washington has recorded 16 catches for 160 yards and three touchdowns in seven games this season. He is also used as a blocker in Pittsburgh’s running game. The Steelers have been without wide receivers Roman Wilson and Michael Pittman Jr., while Rodgers has relied on Washington as a target, particularly near the end zone.
Pittsburgh’s next game is a rematch with the Cleveland Browns, who won their earlier meeting. The Steelers then face the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles before hosting the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans.
