Queens Driver Indicted in Fatal Stroller Collision

Rivera allegedly drove a pickup north on Murray Street at about 8:35 a.m. and went through a stop sign at 32nd Avenue without stopping. Prosecutors say he accelerated through the intersection and struck Hu, who was in a stroller being pushed across the street by his nanny in a marked crosswalk.

Emergency responders took Hu to Jacobi Hospital, where he later died. The 69-year-old nanny was taken to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital with an injury to her right arm and was listed in stable condition.

Rivera stayed at the location, and authorities then arrested him. Prosecutors say he did not pass a roadside sobriety screening, and a subsequent test detected cocaine and THC. They also allege he was driving in breach of restrictions imposed in connection with an open Bronx DWI case from April 2026.

A Queens grand jury returned an indictment charging Rivera with 12 offenses: manslaughter, vehicular homicide, assault, operating while impaired by drugs, reckless driving and failing to stop at a sign. A judge set bail at $250,000 cash or $300,000 bond, with electronic monitoring.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 27, 2027. A conviction on the most serious charge could bring five to 15 years in prison. His attorney information was not immediately available.
