Instagram Brings Edits Video App to Mac Desktop
Instagram has brought its Edits video-editing app to Mac computers, extending a product first released for phones last year. The desktop launch positions Edits more directly against CapCut, which has offered desktop software for Windows and Mac since 2021. The new app is currently available only on macOS, not Windows or Linux.
Edits Desktop includes a multi-track timeline, audio waveforms, keyframes, color-grading tools and customizable keyboard shortcuts. Creators can also use licensed and royalty-free audio, add automatic captions in several languages, and import their own fonts. Saved audio and text styles from the mobile app are available on desktop.
The desktop editor can connect with AI agents through an MCP interface. Instagram’s Matthew Simari said users can have an agent create a rough cut, then switch to manual editing in Edits. The app also supports publishing directly to Instagram, with tagging and location features, as well as watermark-free 4K exports in horizontal and vertical formats.
Editing a single project across mobile and desktop is not yet supported, but Instagram says it is working on that capability. The company plans weekly desktop updates and says it will continue developing the mobile app, which it says is used by more than 50 million creators.
