Commanders Face Struggling Eagles in Pivotal Week 8 Matchup
Philadelphia’s loss to Dallas left the Eagles with a 2-5 record and, according to a playoff simulator, a 4% chance of reaching the postseason. The Cowboys ran for 204 yards, led by Javonte Williams’ 155 on 25 carries, and also got three touchdown passes from Dak Prescott. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said the team needed to improve its coaching, execution, blocking and tackling.
Washington has had 13 days to prepare for Sunday night’s game, while Philadelphia is coming off a short week. The Eagles are expected to be without quarterback Jalen Hurts, and running back Saquon Barkley’s status is uncertain after he left Monday’s game with a back injury.
The Commanders will need more from their ground game. Their three leading running backs combined for 43 yards on 13 carries against San Francisco before the bye. Washington’s offensive line has also struggled: quarterback Jayden Daniels faced pressure on 39.3% of dropbacks in that game, and the team committed five pre-snap penalties.
Washington’s season is also under strain from injuries. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin will miss the rest of the year after tearing his patellar tendon, while left tackle Laremy Tunsil and running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt have been placed on the IR list. The teams met in Week 1, when Philadelphia defensive coordinator Vic Fangio faced Washington offensive coordinator David Blough. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman also faces a November 10 trade deadline, with several Philadelphia players nearing the end of their contracts.
