Netflix Orders Prep Series From Nicole Taylor
Netflix has ordered a half-hour series based on Prep, Curtis Sittenfeld’s debut novel, published in 2005. The coming-of-age drama follows Lee Fiora, a scholarship student from Indiana navigating high school at Ault, an elite boarding school in Massachusetts, where she is an outsider among wealthier classmates.
Nicole Taylor, who wrote Netflix’s One Day, will adapt the book and serve as showrunner. She will also executive produce with Sittenfeld and alongside Will Ferrell, Jessica Elbaum, and Alix Taylor from Gloria Sanchez Productions. The series is a drama, not a comedy, and a writers’ room is expected to begin work in January.
Taylor has described the novel as a sharp portrayal of an introspective teenage girl and the challenges of moving between social classes. Sittenfeld praised Taylor’s scripts, saying the adaptation had deepened her understanding of the book.
The project has taken years to reach this stage. HBO previously developed a comedy version of Prep, but it did not proceed. Netflix’s order adds the series to its upcoming young-adult slate; the streamer has said its YA titles have accumulated more than 10.4 billion global views since it began publishing comprehensive viewing figures in the first half of 2023.
