Moores Mill Road Bridge Closure Could Last Until December 16

On November 2, Atlanta officials said the bridge on Moores Mill Road spanning Peachtree Creek could reopen as soon as December 16. The bridge in northwest Atlanta has been closed since October 20, when a heavy vehicle struck it and damaged structural supports and a water line. An earlier timetable put the reopening target at December 15, while the transportation department said the bridge would stay closed until restoration is finished.

The Atlanta Department of Transportation is handling bridge work, while the Department of Watershed Management repairs water infrastructure. Crews are installing and testing temporary systems to maintain water service. The agencies planned site preparation and foundation work from November 2 through November 8. Repairs also require attention to erosion and stabilization, Transportation Commissioner Solomon Caviness said.

The city is directing drivers onto detours using Ridgewood Road and West Wesley Road, rather than neighborhood streets. Councilmember Dustin Hillis said the city would try to reduce the schedule by using time set aside for weather delays. The closure is expected to last about eight weeks if the December target holds.
