Car Crash Partially Collapses Historic Athens Building
A car crashed into the historic Magnolias Bar building in downtown Athens on the morning of November 4, causing part of the building to collapse, police said. The crash happened at the intersection of East Broad and North Jackson streets, near the University of Georgia campus.
Police closed East Broad Street in the area and urged people to avoid nearby streets while crews cleared debris. The closure was described as covering the stretch between Lumpkin and Thomas streets; an earlier police notice said East Broad was shut from College Avenue through North Thomas Street.
A photo shared by the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department showed a building at the scene. Police had not said whether anyone was injured.
The police response was ongoing, and the duration of the closure had not been specified.
