Man sentenced to 43.5 years in missing Kansas teen case
A Maricopa County jury found Cristian Caal-Mucu guilty on two charges involving sexual misconduct against a minor, along with one charge of custodial interference. The 24-year-old was sentenced on November 2 to a total of 43.5 years in prison, with the terms to be served consecutively: 20 years for each sexual misconduct count and 3.5 years for custodial interference.
Chandler police found the 14-year-old in a hotel close to Cooper Road, beside the Loop 202 San Tan Freeway, on July 31, 2025. Officers had been alerted by the Finney County Sheriff’s Office in Kansas after the girl’s cellphone location indicated she was in Chandler. Hotel staff confirmed that Caal-Mucu had booked the room.
The girl told police she became acquainted with Caal-Mucu via his sister, whom she had babysat in Kansas, and that they began dating when she was 13. About five weeks before she was found, she asked him to help her leave home. He brought her to Arizona after beginning a job there, and had sex with her at the hotel, prosecutors said.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell said the teenager’s wish to leave home did not justify an adult taking her from her parents and having sex with her. She also thanked Chandler police for rescuing the girl and prosecutors for securing the conviction.
