Canton Man Gets 12 Years in Prison for Threatening Ex
Published October 30, 2026. Jesse Logan Ellis, 27, of Canton, received a 30-year sentence, including 12 years behind bars followed by 18 years of probation. He admitted guilt to charges involving an aggravated assault intended to kill, another aggravated assault count, and unlawful confinement. The judge rejected a defense request to sentence him under Georgia’s First Offender Act.
The charges arose from a May 13 incident. Prosecutors said Ellis’ former girlfriend went to his home to get her motorcycle helmet, but he prevented her from leaving. She escaped by asking to use a bathroom in another building, then sought help from two acquaintances at a nearby home.
When they returned with her, Ellis said she could not end the relationship, prosecutors said. He poured gasoline on himself, held her in a bear hug and lifted a lighter, warning he would ignite them both. The acquaintances pulled her away, took the lighter and called 911. Deputies found her crying by the roadside.
Assistant District Attorney Ashley Snow said the woman feared she might be burned alive and described the experience as having lasting emotional effects. District Attorney Susan K. Treadaway said attempts to leave an abusive relationship can prompt dangerous escalation.
Ellis’ probation terms include no contact with the woman, surrendering all weapons, and completing a family violence intervention program and assessment and care for mental health and substance use issues.
