Chiefs’ Late Penalty Wipes Out Potential Game-Winning Touchdown
Kansas City led 24-13 in the fourth quarter on November 1 before Denver scored twice to take a 28-24 lead. The Chiefs had a late chance to respond when Patrick Mahomes connected with Rashee Rice for a touchdown, but a false-start call on right tackle Jaylon Moore erased the score. On the next play, Mahomes was sacked, ending the game and putting Denver atop the AFC West.
The Chiefs were penalized 11 times for 105 yards. Kelce, penalized for moving too soon earlier in the game, said the team needed to address its mistakes and that he had to improve his own play. He had five catches for 67 yards. Coach Andy Reid said penalties were frustrating and could take opportunities away from the team; he also said the Chiefs would learn from the loss.
Kansas City had other costly problems. Harrison Butker missed a fourth-quarter field goal, and the defense struggled with missed tackles late. Mahomes threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns. The Chiefs are 5-2, and their next game is at home against the New York Jets in Week 9.
