Chiefs Fall to Broncos After Late False-Start Call
The Chiefs led for much of their Week 8 game in Denver but fell 28-24 after the Broncos rallied. Kansas City is now 5-2, with two straight losses after opening the season 5-0; Denver moved into first place in the AFC West.
With 15 seconds left, Patrick Mahomes drove Kansas City to the Broncos’ 1-yard line. After an incomplete pass and a run stopped short, Mahomes appeared to connect with Rashee Rice for a touchdown on fourth down. Officials instead flagged right tackle Jaylon Moore for moving early, moving the ball back five yards. Mahomes was sacked on the next play, ending the game.
Coach Andy Reid said he had not seen a false start, though he noticed Moore move his head. Moore said he had not reviewed the play and would need to be better. The call followed a Denver goal-line stand that preserved the comeback.
Kansas City had other costly mistakes. The team committed 11 penalties for 105 yards, had three three-and-outs and missed a field goal. After a sack on third-and-2 late in the fourth quarter, Reid sent Harrison Butker out for a 54-yard attempt, which went wide right. Denver scored the winning touchdown two plays later.
Reid pointed to missed tackles and penalties as areas to address, and urged the team to learn from the loss and turn its attention to its next game against the Jets.
