Eagles Rule Out Trading Saquon Barkley Before Deadline
Philadelphia has told potential trade partners that Barkley is not available, as the team looks toward trying again with its current offensive core next season. The 29-year-old has two years and about $35 million remaining on his contract. The Eagles won the Super Bowl in 2024, Barkley’s first season with the team, and still believe they can contend again with key players from that group.
The decision comes as the Eagles’ season has faltered. They have lost five straight games, and quarterback Jalen Hurts is out for the rest of the season after doctors found blood clots on his lungs. Philadelphia entered Sunday’s game against Washington with a 2-5 record and third place in the NFC East.
Barkley has played five games and recorded 244 rushing yards and one touchdown on 43 carries, while dealing with a back injury. He played only nine snaps in the Week 7 loss to Dallas and was expected to try to play against Washington. He said he wanted to give himself a chance to play while he could.
The Eagles could still consider moving other players before the deadline, but Barkley is not part of those plans. His removal from the trade market leaves Indianapolis running back Jonathan Taylor among the leading options for teams looking to add help at the position. The Colts have reportedly discussed a possible trade for Taylor after dealing Quenton Nelson and DeForest Buckner.
