Jesse Legree Leads College Football’s Receiving Race

Jesse Legree has become college football’s leading receiver in his first season at Oregon State. Through seven games, the freshman has caught 46 passes for 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns, remaining atop the FBS rankings after a week off. He has recorded at least 100 receiving yards in each of his first seven games and is averaging 22.6 yards per catch.

Legree’s production has far exceeded the expectations of wide receivers coach James Finley, who initially pictured a season of about 400 or 500 yards. Head coach JaMarcus Shephard also said he had not expected this level of output from a true freshman. Legree opened his college career with 136 yards against Houston, then gained 240 yards against Texas Tech the following week.

The Baltimore native was a three-star recruit who drew interest from several programs, but scholarship opportunities were limited in part by questions about his size and position. He had played defensive back and returned kicks in high school before moving to receiver full-time in his senior year. Oregon State’s staff saw his versatility as a fit for the rebuilding team, which is 5-2 under Shephard and on a five-game winning streak.

Legree announced he will return to Oregon State for the 2027 season. He has also signed with Klutch Sports Group, and former Beaver Chad Johnson pledged $2 million in NIL funding to encourage him to stay at Oregon State. Oregon State was set to face Fresno State on October 31.
