Carr’s Heisman Hopes Put to the Test Against Miami

On November 4, Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr faced a pivotal test in the Heisman race: an upcoming matchup with No. 1 Miami. Carr was the preseason favorite in August, but his standing fell as Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith emerged as a leading contender. Smith’s prospects shifted after Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin suffered a right arm injury against Indiana.

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah was listed as the Heisman favorite at +160, followed by Smith at +280 and Miami receiver Malachi Toney at +410. Carr was at +750. A Miami victory and strong performance would strengthen Mensah’s position, while Toney could enter the race with a standout showing and continued high-level play.

For Carr, the path is narrower: he needs to play well and lead Notre Dame to a win over Miami. A victory would also put Notre Dame in strong position for the College Football Playoff, with the possibility of earning the top seed. Miami, meanwhile, could secure a playoff bye with a win. Four weeks remain in the regular season, leaving time for the race to change; Carr’s late-season touchdown total could also matter, with 10 or more cited as a possible boost to his chances.
