Reich Says Jets Must Get Garrett Wilson More Involved

Wilson has exceeded 100 receiving yards in two of the Jets’ seven games this season. He caught two passes for 26 yards on three targets in Sunday’s loss to the Miami Dolphins, after recording four catches for 44 yards against the New England Patriots the week before. He had three catches for 27 yards in the loss to Chicago earlier this month.

Reich said October 29 that the team wants to get Wilson the ball more often and can create touches or scheme him open. He said Wilson’s pull on opposing defenses has also helped open opportunities for teammates, including plays against Miami that produced more than 100 yards of offense without Wilson making the catch.

The coordinator acknowledged one decision he would change: on a fourth-quarter possession with the game tied, he would have called a play to get Wilson involved rather than the one on which quarterback Geno Smith was tackled behind the line of scrimmage, losing 12 yards on a third-down play. Reich said he needed to do better in that situation.

Wilson has 37 receptions for 444 yards and three touchdowns. The Jets are 2-5 and are scheduled to face the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday in Week 8. Rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr., who caught five passes for 115 yards and scored a touchdown versus Miami, earned the league’s weekly top rookie honor for a second consecutive week.
