Sony Sets Mouthwashing Film With Karyn Kusama Directing
Sony Pictures secured the rights to adapt Mouthwashing as a feature film, based on the indie psychological horror game created by Sweden-based Wrong Organ and released by Critical Reflex. Karyn Kusama is attached to direct, with Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay writing the adaptation. Producing via their Crooked Highway banner are Vince Cheng, Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill; the banner has a deal with Sony’s Screen Gems. The film’s plot has not been disclosed.
Its story centers on five members of a crew marooned on the Tulpar space freighter. As supplies run low and isolation deepens, paranoia reveals fractures among the crew. Its first-person story uses surreal imagery and a nonlinear structure to examine accountability, denial and the damage caused by unchecked power.
Released on PC in 2024, Mouthwashing earned an 88 score on Metacritic and “overwhelmingly positive” Steam user reviews. It has sold close to one million copies on PC and won Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards, plus the New York Game Awards’ Best Hidden Gem prize. Content about the game has drawn 63 million YouTube views and nearly one billion TikTok views.
The game became available on October 29 for PlayStation 5 and 4, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox on PC. Console and PC players can also access it via Game Pass. No film release date was provided.
