Chris Murphy Leaves Hospital After Stroke

Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy was discharged from the hospital on November 6, 2026, after suffering a stroke over the weekend of October 31, 2026. The 53-year-old Democrat will spend several weeks recovering at a rehabilitation facility and expects to miss Senate votes during that time.

Murphy said he called 911 on October 31, 2026, after noticing something was wrong with his body. Doctors diagnosed a small hemorrhagic stroke, a bleed in the brain. He said the experience had been frightening for him and his family and asked for continued respect for their privacy.

Dr. Jose Suarez, who leads the neurocritical care service at Johns Hopkins, where Murphy received treatment, said the senator had made strong progress. Suarez said he expected Murphy to make a full recovery after rehabilitation. Murphy said he planned to stay engaged with colleagues and his team remotely as he worked toward returning to his duties. His office said staff would continue legislative work and constituent services in his absence.
