Delaware voters return Coons to the Senate
Delaware voters have returned Chris Coons to the Senate for a third full term, choosing the Democrat over Republican Mike Katz. The result keeps the state’s Senate representation in Democratic hands as Coons continues his criticism of President Donald Trump’s tariffs and military operation in Iran.
With 94% of votes counted, Coons had 64.2% and Katz 35.8%. The race was projected for Coons on November 3. Katz is a former Democrat who served as a state lawmaker.
Coons has called the Iran conflict a “war of choice” and said it has driven up costs for Americans. He has also suggested he would seek to prevent money from going toward the military campaign, saying he would not provide authorization for it through a defense supplemental.
The election gives Coons another term to press those objections from the Senate. He entered the Senate after a 2010 special election and has represented Delaware ever since. His committee assignments include Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Ethics, Judiciary, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship. He is vice chairman of the Ethics Committee.
Coons wins another term after attacking Trump policies
Chris Coons has won another Senate term in Delaware, despite making opposition to President Donald Trump’s policies a central feature of his public stance on tariffs and the Iran operation. The Democrat defeated Republican Mike Katz, a former Democrat and state lawmaker.
With 94% of votes counted, Coons had 64.2% of the vote to Katz’s 35.8%. The race was projected for Coons on November 3. The result gives the incumbent a third full term, beginning in 2027.
Coons has described the military operation in Iran as a “war of choice,” blamed it for higher costs, and suggested he would seek to prevent its funding. He has also criticized Trump’s tariffs. His position puts opposition to the president’s approach at the center of his Senate record, even as Delaware voters have returned him to office.
Coons has represented the state since winning a 2010 special election. He sits on five panels in the Senate, including Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Ethics, Judiciary, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and is vice chairman of the Ethics Committee.
