Caitlin Clark’s Surprise Appearance Stuns Illinois Players

Caitlin Clark watched Illinois face Penn at the State Farm Center in Champaign on November 5, sitting behind the Quakers’ bench with her boyfriend, Connor McCaffery, the son of Penn coach Fran McCaffery. Illinois won 112-70, improving to 2-0 for the season.

At a postgame news conference, a reporter asked Illinois guard Quentin Coleman and forward Zavier Zens whether they had known Clark was there before tip-off. Both players said they had not. Coleman reacted with surprise, covering his mouth when he heard her name, then joked that he needed to tell his sister.

Coleman connected Zens’ shooting to Clark’s reputation as a prolific scorer, saying she may have brought extra energy to the game. “Dang, she just brought the aura,” he said. Coleman scored 19 points in 20 minutes, making eight of nine shots. Zens finished with 18 points, shooting six of 10 overall and four of eight from three-point range.

Clark, a star for the Indiana Fever, was at the game during the WNBA offseason. Penn is scheduled to host Howard on Monday. The two teams’ next steps come after Illinois’ decisive win, with Clark’s appearance becoming an unexpected postgame talking point.
