Claude Adds a Tool for Reviewing Personal Finances

Anthropic is beginning a beta rollout of Personal Finance, a Claude feature that links users’ bank and credit-card accounts through Plaid. The tool is for subscribers enrolled in Pro, Max and Ultra plans within the United States. Its launch was announced on November 5.

Users can ask Claude to summarize spending across connected accounts, organize transactions into categories such as housing, food and shopping, and answer follow-up questions about spending patterns. The tool can also review bills, help users consider the cost of a large purchase and estimate potential savings.

Anthropic says Claude’s access is read-only: it cannot transfer, manage or invest money, and is not intended to provide investment advice. The information it can view includes account names and types, bank names, the last four account-number digits, balances, credit limits and as much as two years of transaction history. Plaid handles the account connection.

Claude can also flag possible duplicate charges, unexpected fees or rising bills, explain financial terms and calculate interest paid. Anthropic says chats in the Personal Finance hub will not be used to train its models. The company says the feature does not promote its own financial products and has no ads or sponsored recommendations.

The launch follows a similar ChatGPT feature introduced by OpenAI in May. Anthropic described Personal Finance as an initial step and said it is exploring ways for Claude to work alongside licensed professionals and regulated financial firms.
