Nicolas Cage Clarifies Remarks About Being ‘Homeless’
Cage clarified his earlier remarks at the Culver City premiere of Madden on November 4, saying he was not destitute and that his family was doing well. He explained that his Halloween comments referred to the house being unavailable for decorations and trick-or-treaters, rather than to his family’s circumstances. He had made the “a little bit homeless” remark at Los Angeles Comic-Con over the weekend, saying he was staying in hotels after a problem at his Malibu home.
A sinkhole opened in the property’s driveway in early September. Firefighters found it while responding to a suspected gas-main break. The hole, initially about 30 feet by 30 feet, also swallowed a fence, a portable restroom and part of the neighboring street. The damage has extended toward the house, and nearby residents were evacuated as other homes on the street were considered unsafe.
Cage, who bought the oceanfront property for $10.5 million in 2024, received approval for permits to place sandbags near the home and beach to guard against waves and further erosion. Other approved work included removing asphalt debris ahead of shoring and collecting soil samples. Cage and his wife, Riko Shibata, appeared together at the premiere. The couple have a daughter, August, and Cage had said he planned to take her trick-or-treating in Santa Monica.
