Sinkhole Leaves Nicolas Cage Living in Hotels

Cage, 62, told an audience at Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31 that damage to his Malibu home had left him staying in hotels. The actor said his usual Halloween plans were affected because he could not host trick-or-treaters at the house.

His Halloween plan was to bring August, his four-year-old daughter, along for Santa Monica’s door-to-door festivities, then watch Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining after putting her to bed. Cage called the film one of his favorites, despite joking about Kubrick’s Razzie nomination for worst director.

A sinkhole opened near the beachfront property in September, swallowing much of the driveway and damaging the home. The collapse extended into the roadway, blocking access for residents and emergency personnel. Malibu officials designated all 31 homes on the street unsafe; seven were deemed hazardous to occupy, while 24 more lacked safe vehicle access.

Cage has taken steps to address the damage. He sought three permits within days of the sinkhole appearing, including approval to place sandbags along the beach and outside the home to protect it from waves and further erosion. Other approved work covered removing asphalt debris and preparing for shoring and soil sampling.
