United Adds Spotify Streaming to Starlink-Equipped Seatbacks
United passengers will be able to use Spotify on seatback screens aboard aircraft equipped with Starlink satellite internet. The app is designed to provide access to Spotify’s library, including music, podcasts and audiobooks, as well as users’ profiles and playlists. Video podcasts and music videos can also be played on the screens.
To connect a personal account, passengers link their phone to United’s in-flight Wi-Fi and scan a QR code displayed on the seatback. They can then sign in or load a profile already active in the Spotify app. Spotify access through the connection is free, without the need to buy an internet pass.
United developed a native app for its seatback displays after first exploring ways to preload music. Mark Muren, the airline’s managing director for product marketing, said the personalized experience allows customers to use their own accounts and content. United’s digital vice president, Grant Milstead, said Starlink’s speed and coverage made streaming on the screens possible.
The airline began testing Starlink in early 2025 and says nearly half of its daily departures now offer the service. Passengers can use Spotify on their own devices as well as the seatback screens, and United says it plans to work with other streaming services. Travelers can check whether a flight has Starlink through United’s Wi-Fi tracker.
