Voters renew Detroit Zoo millage across three counties
Voters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties approved a renewal of the Detroit Zoo millage, extending a funding source first approved in 2008. The proposal received 73.5% support in Wayne County, 70.6% in Oakland County and 69% in Macomb County.
The 0.1-mill levy is expected to generate about $8.8 million in its first year for maintenance and operations at the 125-acre zoo. The rate will not increase; advocates estimate the annual cost for a home valued at $200,000 will remain about $10.
The Detroit Zoo cares for more than 2,000 animals representing 200 species. Millage funds also support educational programs and school field trips in Southeast Michigan, as well as the Belle Isle Nature Center, which features native Michigan wildlife and indoor interactive exhibits.
Voters also approved a separate millage for the Southeast Michigan Public Historical Museum Authority, with 59.5% voting yes. The ten-year, 0.2-mill proposal applies to Wayne and Oakland counties and will fund the Detroit Historical Society and the African American history museum established by Charles H. Wright. The organizations said the support would help address financial pressures and long-term sustainability. In return, residents would receive free admission, while seniors and students would have free transportation for tours and teachers would receive curriculum and training.
