Fatal I-96 crash closes eastbound lanes in Redford Township

Redford Township police were called to a crash involving several vehicles on eastbound I-96 at 2:47 p.m. on November 3. The crash occurred near Beech Daly Road and the Telegraph exit, and closed the eastbound lanes near Telegraph Road while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Police said a Ford Focus was traveling at high speed as it approached the exit. It struck the rear of a pickup truck moving slowly in the exit lane amid traffic and congestion. The impact sent the truck spinning into an SUV, and the Focus caught fire.

The Ford’s driver was taken to a hospital and later died. Other people affected by the collision were injured, but their injuries were not expected to be life-threatening, police said.

Police identified speed as a factor. Whether drugs or alcohol played a role had not been established and remained under investigation.

Michigan State Police assisted Redford Township police at the scene, while state troopers and the Michigan Department of Transportation helped manage traffic. Eastbound drivers were directed off I-96 at Beech Daly Road and urged to take alternate routes, use caution and expect delays while the road was closed.
