Child killed in Detroit freeway crash; second crash injures eight

Michigan State Police responded around 11:45 p.m. on October 31 to a collision on westbound Davison Freeway near I-75. Investigators said a Chevrolet Impala struck a vehicle from behind, sending that vehicle into a third car.

A child riding in the Impala was thrown from it and later died at a hospital. Five other people in the car were also taken to hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Police arrested the Impala’s driver on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and causing a death; the driver was being treated for crash injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

A separate collision occurred over an hour afterward on the southbound lanes of I-75 near Schaefer, sending eight people for medical treatment. Both highways were closed for several hours and have since reopened.
