Ravens Name Joe Fagnano Starting Quarterback Against Jaguars
Ravens coach Jesse Minter named Joe Fagnano the starter for Baltimore’s Thursday night home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. It will be the undrafted rookie’s first NFL start and the team’s third starting quarterback this season.
Jackson injured his right thumb early in Sunday’s 36-10 loss to Buffalo, after returning from a three-game absence caused by a left ankle injury. Huntley took over but later left with a turf toe injury. Minter said both could be placed on injured reserve before Thursday’s game.
Fagnano, 25, had been Baltimore’s emergency third quarterback. He completed 10 of 21 passes for 91 yards and threw an interception against Buffalo; he also lost a fumble and was sacked three times. He hurt his right ankle in the game and practiced Tuesday wearing a brace, but was listed as a full participant.
The Ravens added quarterbacks Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed for depth. Fagnano made the 53-player roster after a preseason in which he completed 74.7% of his passes for 509 yards, three touchdowns and one interception. Minter praised his composure and said he had made the most of opportunities in training camp and preseason.
Baltimore has lost three straight games. The Jaguars, who enter the matchup 5-2, allow 16 points per game, second-best in the NFL. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET. Ravens kicker Tyler Loop was also placed on injured reserve with a groin injury; practice squad kicker Jake Moody is set to be elevated for the game.
