Oregon School Shooting Survivor’s 911 Call Released

The call, which lasts just over a minute, captures Giamanco telling an emergency operator that an armed person was at the school his daughter attended. Giamanco was driving home for lunch when he saw the 16-year-old attacker at Silver Rail Elementary. He told the operator he was armed and would intervene. The operator urged him to wait for police, while Giamanco pressed for help and said the attacker was going inside. When asked whether the attacker was shooting, he said yes. The call ended as the operator sought more information.

The shooting happened on October 15. The attacker, Griffin J. John II, entered through locked doors and claimed the lives of three pupils, aged 5, 8 and 11, along with an educator who taught in a classroom serving students with special needs. A different student suffered critical injuries, while a second teacher was wounded.

Before Giamanco arrived, teacher Cassidy Schutz confronted the attacker, threw her phone at him and struggled to control his weapon. Giamanco later said her actions created an opportunity for him to fire. He entered through an open window, saw Schutz and the attacker, and shot him. A second teacher, Becky Drury, said she was shot while trying to close the classroom door and then pretended to be dead. Giamanco has said he regrets not getting there in time to prevent the deaths and injuries.
