Father’s 911 Call Captures Oregon School Shooting Response
An 911 recording released on November 3 captures Kaylub Giamanco alerting a dispatcher to a gunman at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, Oregon, as the October 15 attack unfolded. Giamanco, 36, said his daughters were inside and warned that he was armed and would shoot the attacker if necessary.
Giamanco had been driving past the school when he saw the gunman. He told the dispatcher he was about to confront him, then identified the school again as the dispatcher sought details about the attacker’s location. Giamanco said shots were being fired and urged the dispatcher to act. The call ended shortly after the dispatcher asked him to describe the gunman and said help was on the way.
Giamanco rushed into the school and killed the attacker with his handgun. The gunman took the lives of three children, aged 5, 8 and 11, as well as a 25-year-old teacher. Giamanco’s two daughters survived the shooting.
