Hunger Games Prequel to Get 3D Release on Meta VR Glasses
Lionsgate and Meta have teamed up to make The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping available in 3D in theaters and, after its cinema run, on Meta’s upcoming VR glasses. The movie is scheduled to open November 20; the glasses are expected to reach consumers in spring 2027.
The 3D conversion was completed with DNEG, an effects and animation studio. Meta said this is its first collaboration with a Hollywood studio to convert a feature film into 3D. The companies described the arrangement as a first-of-its-kind partnership, and Lionsgate said it may announce more titles for the glasses later.
Director Francis Lawrence said 3D offered another way to draw audiences into the experience of Haymitch, the central character. The film follows a younger version of the character, played by Joseph Zada; Woody Harrelson played him in earlier films. Lionsgate chief revenue officer Jim Packer said the partnership explores new ways for viewers to experience the franchise. Meta’s Sarah Malkin said the film would work both in cinemas and as an at-home experience.
The new film is a prequel in the Hunger Games franchise, based on Suzanne Collins’ books. The series has earned more than $3.3 billion worldwide across five feature films, and has also expanded into a London stage production. A theme park attraction in Dubai is planned.
