Three Dogs Attack Hazel Park Owner and Bite Officer

At about 8:17 p.m. on October 31, police responded to a residence on Milton Street in Hazel Park. They found a 39-year-old woman on the driveway being attacked by three dogs: two pit bulls and a Presa Canario.

The first officer tried to stop the attack, including using a Taser twice. One dog bit her thigh. She fired at a dog, then tried to help the woman; when the wounded dog and another approached again, another officer shot the wounded animal, killing it.

The woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries to her neck, arms and legs. The bitten officer was treated and released. Police Chief William Hamel said the woman was recovering and praised the officer’s actions.

The two surviving dogs ran off but were later found and placed in animal control custody. Police said the dogs belonged to the woman and her husband, and lacked city registration. A resident told officers the woman had brought a stray puppy into the home before the attack.

The incident remains under investigation. Hamel said officers faced an immediate danger and could not wait for animal control to arrive.
