Woman Killed in Shooting at Hammond Walmart
Police were called to Walmart North in Hammond at about 9:09 a.m. on November 2 after an off-duty Hammond officer working security reported a shooting. The store is at 1100 5th Ave., near the Illinois state line.
Police said a man was speaking with a female employee in an aisle when the encounter became physical. The man then got a gun and fired at her repeatedly. She was about 25 years old and succumbed to her wounds at the scene.
An off-duty officer was at the store and took the suspect into custody. Police Capt. Steve Kellogg said the man moved several aisles away, sat on the ground and waited for police to arrive. The officer called police and detained him.
Authorities said the attack appeared to be a one-off event and that people faced no continuing danger. The Hammond location was set to stay closed for the rest of November 2 as the investigation continued. Police said they would provide more information as it became available.
Hammond police expressed condolences to the woman’s family, friends and coworkers. Walmart said it was heartbroken by the shooting and was working with authorities as they investigated.
