Man Charged With Murder in Hammond Walmart Shooting

A 22-year-old Joliet man has been charged with murder in the fatal shooting of a Walmart employee in Hammond, Indiana. The shooting happened on November 2 at the store on 5th Avenue, near the Illinois state line, and the victim was identified as 21-year-old Dakota Norwood of Chicago.

Police were called to the store shortly after 9 a.m. An off-duty Hammond police officer working security there responded to the gunfire. The officer reported that a shooting had occurred and that a suspect was in custody.

Investigators said Norwood and Dorian Kevon Robertson knew each other and had been in a relationship. Police said a conversation between them in a store aisle turned physical before Robertson allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Norwood multiple times. The nature and duration of their relationship remain under investigation, police said.

Norwood was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. An autopsy found that she died from multiple gunshot wounds, and the coroner classified the death as a homicide.

Robertson remains in custody at the Lake County Jail. He has been charged with murder.
