Networks Expand Election Night Data Displays

CNN plans to bring anchors, analysts and correspondents together on one set for its November 3 midterm coverage, with more data visible to both the team and viewers. Jake Tapper and Anderson Cooper will co-anchor, while John King uses an upgraded Magic Wall and decision desk staff explain the reasoning behind race calls in real time.

The new Magic Wall links county-level information, including demographics and past voting patterns, and features a live leaderboard tracking Senate, House and governor races and potential party flips. CNN says the arrangement is intended to help its team connect the data and make it easier for viewers to follow how races are developing.

Other networks are also leaning on election graphics. NBC News plans a digital-only Kornacki-cam alongside Steve Kornacki’s on-air role, while MS NOW will stream a view of Ali Velshi at his data board. Fox News’ Bill Hemmer will use a studio-floor graphic to show vote counts in key counties. ABC News is introducing Vote Shift, which will track changes in voter preferences compared with 2024.

Networks see the displays as a way to make complex results easier to understand and offer viewers information they can trust. CNN’s King, who has used the Magic Wall since 2008, also cautioned against overloading audiences or making the process needlessly complicated.

Some critics say vivid graphics and theatrical presentation could make election coverage feel like a game, particularly as interest in wagering and prediction markets grows. Broadcasters plan to use the displays to explain results and local voting patterns as returns come in.
