Balogun Scores as Monaco Lose to Paris FC

Balogun ended a months-long scoring drought on November 1, coming off the bench to score Monaco’s only goal in a 3-1 defeat by Paris FC. The American striker was introduced at half-time and found the net in the 66th minute, redirecting a low cross from right-back Vanderson into the far side of goal.

The goal came after a difficult stretch for the 25-year-old. His World Cup breakthrough was followed by controversy over a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina and its reversal. A proposed move to Everton also fell through on transfer deadline day after Balogun’s medical visit, leaving him at Monaco.

Balogun had made five Ligue 1 appearances this season, all as a substitute, and Sunday’s 45 minutes were his longest outing so far. Monaco manager Filipe Luís has favored 20-year-old Paris Brunner, while Balogun was also left out of the club’s squad for the Uefa Conference League.

Monaco had few chances before the break, while Paris FC scored twice late in the first half. Balogun’s goal offered a brief response, but Paris added a third and secured the win.

The timing could matter for the USMNT. Mauricio Pochettino is likely to select his November squad ahead of a camp beginning November 9. Balogun missed the previous camp after dealing with a minor leg issue and the transfer uncertainty. His limited minutes may weigh against a recall, although he remains a long-term option at striker. Teenagers Julian Hall and Justin Ellis scored five goals combined across four friendlies last month.
