Delaware State Tops Norfolk State in Philadelphia HBCU Classic

Delaware State beat Norfolk State 36-33 on October 31 at Lincoln Financial Field, winning a Halloween rematch of the teams’ inaugural HBCU Classic. Delaware State is coached by former Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson, while former Eagles quarterback Michael Vick leads Norfolk State. Both returned to Philadelphia for the game, which drew thousands of fans.

The matchup was part of a two-day HBCU celebration at the stadium. A pregame marching-band contest held during Philly’s weeklong festivities drew seven schools: Delaware State, Hampton, Morgan State, Lincoln, Norfolk State, Virginia State and Virginia Union. At halftime, the two teams’ bands played arrangements including music by Rihanna and Jay-Z. Former Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham and former 76ers star Allen Iverson were also at the game.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker joined the festivities and said the city had begun something with its HBCU events. Fans described the gatherings as welcoming and family-oriented, and said bringing the schools to the city could help local young people learn about them. Renel Sample, an Elizabeth City State alumnus, said attending an HBCU helped change his life and that such opportunities could benefit other students. The game also gave players a chance to compete at an NFL stadium under the leadership of two former professional stars.
