Delaware State Wins HBCU Week Showdown on Final Kick
A 35-yard field goal as time expired gave Delaware State a 36-33 victory over Norfolk State on October 31, completing a 17-point comeback at Lincoln Financial Field. The game was the finale of Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker’s weeklong celebration of historically Black colleges and universities.
Thousands attended, with graduates, current students and members of Black Greek-letter organizations gathering for tailgating and other festivities before kickoff. Events throughout the week were organized by the mayor’s office to highlight HBCUs’ traditions and contributions to the community.
The matchup brought two former Philadelphia Eagles players back to the stadium as opposing head coaches: Michael Vick for Norfolk State and DeSean Jackson for Delaware State. Brandon Graham, who previously played on Philadelphia’s defensive line, also joined the celebration.
Attendees described the event as a chance to give HBCUs greater visibility and connect generations of graduates and students. Delaware State student El Hadji Mbaye said recognition matters for a small school like his. Lincoln University alumnus Edward Franklin spoke about the community and sense of identity he associated with HBCUs, while Delaware State alumnus Master Brown credited his college with shaping his life.
The score stayed level until Delaware State’s decisive kick, bringing the week’s festivities to a dramatic close.
