Giants Enter Bye Week Atop NFC East After Resilient Start
The Giants reached their October 31 bye week with a winning record, the NFC East lead and renewed hopes of making the playoffs. Their 4-2-1 start has come despite season-ending injuries to quarterback Jaxson Dart and linebacker Brian Burns, as well as a season-ending shoulder injury to leading tackler Tremaine Edmunds.
Coach John Harbaugh’s first season has brought a demanding approach and a team that has found ways to stay competitive. General manager Joe Schoen praised the players’ grit and their ability to perform late in games. Harbaugh said the team still has substantial work ahead and will need its best execution for a difficult stretch of physical games in November.
J.J. McCarthy, who took over as starting quarterback in Week 6, is central to the team’s prospects. His completion rate is 63.3%, with 495 passing yards and one touchdown. New York will also look for rookie receiver Malachi Fields to build on 16 catches for 248 yards and a touchdown, including an 83-yard outing against Houston.
Running back Cam Skattebo gave the offense a boost in that overtime win, rushing 17 times for 124 yards and a touchdown. On defense, rookie linebacker Arvell Reese leads the team with 56 tackles, while cornerback Deonte Banks has made 10 pass breakups and returned an interception 98 yards for a score. Banks also limited Houston receiver Nico Collins to a single reception, four yards gained, on four targets.
Kicker Dominic Zvada has made 13 of 18 field goals and all 12 extra-point attempts. Harbaugh said the Giants had no current plan to replace him, though the team hopes he can address mechanical issues during the bye. New York returns to action after the break, with its division lead and playoff hopes facing a demanding test in the weeks ahead.
