Jeanie Buss Seeks to Block Siblings’ Lakers Stake Sale
In a court filing submitted October 28, 2026, in Los Angeles Superior Court, Buss accused her siblings of coordinating a campaign against her and said they were trying to undermine her position through the media. She asked the judge to block a sale of the family’s remaining Lakers shares and remove Janie and Joey Buss as co-trustees of the family trust. Her filing also seeks legal costs and other remedies tied to an alleged breach of a 2017 court order.
That order requires the family to retain at least a 15% stake in the team. NBA rules also require a governor to hold at least that much ownership, meaning a sale of the family’s 17.8% interest would end Jeanie Buss’s eligibility for the role.
The dispute involves all six children of the late Lakers owner Jerry Buss. Five siblings—Jesse, Joey, Janie, Jim and Johnny—support selling the family’s shares. Each sibling could receive an additional $371 million under the sale arrangement. Their lawyers have argued that Jeanie Buss is putting her own interest in remaining in control ahead of rights granted to the family’s beneficiaries.
The proposed buyers, Joshua Kushner and former Disney chief executive Bob Iger, are also set to acquire about 65% of the team from Mark Walter at a reported valuation of $12.5 billion. If the family sells its stake as well, the buyers would own about 83% of the Lakers. League governors have approved the deal, but Kushner must sell his minority interest in the Miami Heat before it is finalized.
A hearing is scheduled for December 8 in Los Angeles Superior Court. The judge’s decision could determine whether the family’s shares can be sold and whether Buss remains eligible to govern the team.
