Byron Allen Sells His Entire Starz Stake
Byron Allen has sold all of his shares in Starz, ending his investment in the pay-TV and streaming company. Records made public on October 29, 2026, show that Allen’s investment arm sold 1.8 million shares in transactions from August 9 through September 29, at prices ranging from about $21 to $26 a share. The sales brought in roughly $44.9 million.
Allen acquired the 10.7% stake in March for $25 million from Liberty 77 Capital, an investment fund associated with former Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin. The sale netted Allen nearly $20 million more than he paid for the shares.
After Allen disclosed his purchase, Starz adopted a poison pill, a measure intended to deter a larger stake or hostile takeover. Allen had said he wanted to control Starz and saw a streaming service as a complement to his other media businesses. He has since sold his full position.
The sale was disclosed as Starz announced its third-quarter results on October 29, 2026. Starz, which became independent of Lionsgate last year, reduced its net loss to $34.8 million from $52.6 million a year earlier. Revenue was $322.4 million, unchanged year over year, while streaming revenue rose 1.7% to $226.6 million.
Allen heads Allen Media Group, whose portfolio includes broadcast TV stations and networks such as The Weather Channel. He also controls a stake in BuzzFeed and produces the comedy program Comics Unleashed.
