NASA Shares Halloween-Themed Images of Eerie Space Shapes

NASA shared a collection of eerie-looking images ahead of Halloween, highlighting cosmic objects whose shapes suggest eyes, a skull and a face. The agency featured four eye-like views and asked whether viewers ever feel they are being watched, noting that the objects are millions of light-years away.

One image shows active regions on the Sun forming what looks like a carved pumpkin face. Another depicts MyCn18, a young planetary nebula about 8,000 light-years away, with a turquoise-green shape resembling an eye. The image was taken by the Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2.

An X-ray image from the Chandra Observatory shows the Perseus Cluster of galaxies. Two dark bubbles beside a bright central source create a skull-like appearance. The collection also includes an infrared image at medium wavelengths of the Pillars of Creation and a Hubble image of the green and red Ghost Head Nebula.

A separate image shows a region of northern Mars that resembles a face. NASA’s Viking 1 Orbiter photographed it on July 25, 1976. Other featured space shapes include a red eye-like form associated with the planet Fomalhaut b as it orbits its parent star.
