Panthers Dismiss Evero After Packers Loss

Carolina also named defensive line coach Todd Wash interim defensive coordinator, giving him responsibility for calling the defense’s plays. AC Carter, who works with outside linebackers and oversees the run game, will take on coaching the defensive line as well. Head coach Dave Canales announced the changes Friday, October 30.

The move followed a 3-4 start and two heavy defeats in the Panthers’ previous games. Carolina gave up 43 points to Tampa Bay on October 25, then lost on the road to Green Bay. Packers quarterback Jordan Love completed 30 of 41 passes for 288 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.

Carolina’s defense has struggled against the run and has allowed 27.6 points per game this season. Injuries have weakened the secondary: cornerbacks Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and Akayleb Evans were on injured reserve for the Packers game. The defense also allowed 59 points in its season-opening loss to Chicago, the most in a game in franchise history.

Evero joined the Panthers in 2023. The defense ranked fourth in total defense in his first season, then finished last in the league in points and yards allowed in 2024. It improved to 15th in points allowed and 16th in yards allowed in 2025. Wash previously coordinated Jacksonville’s defense for five seasons, including its 2017 run to the AFC Championship Game.

Carolina is 3-4 and tied with Atlanta atop the NFC South. Wash is set to lead the defense when the Panthers host Denver on November 8.
