AI Agents Have Generated Only Hundreds of DoorDash Orders

DoorDash CEO Tony Xu said during the company’s third-quarter earnings call that third-party AI agents had generated “several hundred” orders in total. Most customers still place orders through DoorDash’s own app, he said.

The figure is small compared with DoorDash’s broader volume: the company handled nearly 1 billion orders in the third quarter of 2026. Xu described agent-based ordering as a low-use case so far and said ordering food is a simple task customers generally do directly through DoorDash.

Xu said AI agents could be more useful for major purchases that require more consideration, or when they can perform tasks proactively in the background. He also said the area is changing quickly and that DoorDash wants to understand how people might use agents and maintain relationships with the companies that build them. He raised advertising within AI agents as a possible future opportunity.

DoorDash has introduced its own AI tools, including a text-based ordering agent, a command-line agent and the Ask DoorDash chatbot. Its Model Context Protocol connector lets some third-party AI tools place orders, but it is in early beta and is mainly being used to organize corporate lunches. The connector launched less than a month before the earnings call, and wider use of agent-based ordering remains an evolving area.
