Musk Says Grok Bot Usage Limits Reflect High Costs
Some Grok Bot users said on X over the Halloween weekend that their weekly usage limits had been reached sooner than expected. In some cases, users said their usage meter had jumped to its cap before the scheduled reset, despite little or no use of the AI agent overnight. Musk said the change was not a glitch, explaining that the cost of providing the service was too high compared with its revenue. He described reducing allowances and telling users as a sensible step.
SpaceX launched Grok Bot in August. The agent can use a virtual computer to carry out tasks such as shopping, and is offered through plans ranging from free access to $200 a month. Each plan has a weekly usage limit. SpaceX said last month that Grok Bot had 800,000 paying weekly users; Musk has called it the fastest-growing product he has seen.
SpaceX has not provided details on how users’ allowances will change going forward. The company recently announced plans to include Grok Bot in an $8-a-month X subscription, alongside X Premium and the Cursor coding platform. Musk has also said the agent will use models beyond Grok. The sudden limits have prompted criticism from users, while raising questions about whether revenue can keep pace with the cost of running AI services.
