Former Massachusetts Trooper Receives Dishonorable Discharge
The Massachusetts State Police said former trooper Stephen P. Smith received a dishonorable discharge after an internal investigation into multiple consecutive traffic stops involving the same motorist. The agency did not identify the motorist or specify when Smith resigned. He had served for about three years and was assigned to the Weston barracks.
State Police said Smith was put on restricted duty on May 22 and suspended without pay on July 7. The agency opened an internal affairs investigation and sent its initial investigative conclusions to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office for a separate criminal assessment.
The department said the discharge reflected its commitment to respectful and ethical conduct while officers patrol and interact with the public. Smith resigned while the internal investigation was still underway.
His authorization to serve in state law enforcement lapsed in August. The POST Commission database listed his licensing status as under “Further Certification Review.”
